Get Involved!

Shalom Academy's one of the core principles is to be transparent to our donors and allow them to have ownership of the projects they are passionate about. Donors as investors, get to be involved in any of the Projects Shalom Academy board finds very much in need for the children of India.

Once you Adopt a Project, you and your family could be involved in shaping the future of the children. You can constantly get report and you can suggest your feedback, if you see fit you can appoint a staff from your perspective. Shalom Academy will train them and prepare them to have their responsibilities to shape the future generation.

PROJECT E: The Voice and Vision Project

Description: Of the 1.2 billion people in India, it is estimated that 60 million are deaf and mute children. Many organizations are willing to provide education for these children, but very few are willing to provide employment. The problem is what will these children do after their higher secondary, diploma or undergraduate education? If they stay at home, they become a burden to their family. Even if hired by an employer, their daily wage is only Rs. 6-10, a third of the regular salary. While some employers pity these children, apathy is predominant in most. To cater to the needs of such young people, we plan to open a Training/Small-Scale Business Center for Hearing and Speaking Impaired Youth at Tiruverumbur (near BHEL, Trichy).

One of our friends, a parent of two children with hearing and speaking impairments, is dedicated to serving such children. She shared her vision, offering such ideas as conducting sewing classes, rubber stamp creation, computer typewriting, photocopying, lamination, binding, wedding- and business-card design.

PROJECT F: VERTU Project

[Village Education Rendered through the Unemployed]
After-school free tuition centers in remote villages

Project Description: An idle mind is the devil's workshop. It is not uncommon for young people to spend years waiting for a job in India. VERTU is a program they can work through until they find employment. Shalom Academy is now looking for unemployed graduates to work part time for 2 hours a day from Monday to Friday conducting classes for children in remote villages. We have allocated a budget of Rs. 2000 per month for this new venture. Beginning August 2009, our staff is identifying candidates for evening tutoring in rural villages. The salary for tutors could vary from Rs. 500 to Rs. 1000 per month. At present, we are only looking for 3-4 part-time tutors. We are actively seeking sponsors for these tutors so that we can help many more rural villages.

PROJECT G: RESCUE Project

[Rescue and educate children in bonded labor]

Project Description: In order to rescue and help children in bonded labor, we plan to create awareness among parents and establish a study center in partnership with bona fide organizations already working in these areas; talks are in progress with an organization called Metro Mission. The plan and detailed cost are in preparation.
